[Special Project: International Students Become ‘K-Elite’]
Local areas in Korea are making efforts to attract and help international students settle down and work long-term after graduation. In order to solve the problem of labor shortage due to the alarming population decline in Korea. Measures include cooperation between universities, local governments and businesses to facilitate international students’ employment and long-term visa (F-2-R). In addition, local areas have introduced policies to support students and businesses such as providing dormitories, high salaries and benefits. The goal is to retain international students and develop them as local human resources.
Many provinces such as Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Chungbuk and Gangwon are implementing programs to attract international students, especially from countries like Vietnam and Mongolia, and holding job fairs to connect students with businesses.
In addition, local governments are also proposing changes to visa laws to make it easier for international students to graduate and help them stay in Korea for long-term work.
However, the rate of international students finding jobs in Korea after graduation remains low (only about 8% in 2022), mainly due to complicated procedures related to visa extension and work visa conversion. Experts recommend improving visa policies and providing more support from universities, businesses, and governments to help international students find jobs more easily and stay long-term in local areas.
