People are born into families, live in families, and die in families. Families feel familiar because they are always around us, but because of that familiarity, it is difficult to realize how our families influence us and how we influence our families. However, an important part of an individual’s identity comes from their family. This may be because they are directly influenced by someone in their family, or because they have naturally absorbed and become accustomed to their family’s culture.

In Korean there is a saying: “가랑비에 옷 젖듯이” (Rough translation: like a light rain that wets clothes; a steady rain that soaks in slowly). Let’s learn about family and social culture in Korea through this article with C-Korea!

Family culture is an important foundation in shaping Korean society. However, economic, social and cultural changes in the modern era have created many challenges to the traditional family structure.

The traditional Korean family used to be based on a patriarchal model, where generations lived together and the roles of each member were clearly defined. However, with economic development and changes in social awareness, this model is gradually changing. The main issues include:

  • Declining marriage and childbearing rates: Singlehood and late marriage are becoming more common.
  • Increase in nuclear families: The number of small or single-parent families is increasing dramatically.
  • Changing gender roles: The role of women in the family and society has changed dramatically, leading to a new balance of power in the family.

To meet current challenges, breakthrough solutions are needed:

  • Changing support policies: Governments need to develop policies to support families, including child welfare and parental leave.
  • Promoting gender equality: Increasing awareness of equal roles between men and women in the family.
  • Encouraging family diversity: Accepting and supporting different types of families, including single-parent families and multicultural families.

Today, there have been changes in Korean family culture. Building a new family culture not only helps to solve current challenges but also contributes to building a more sustainable and balanced society.

Hopefully, through the above article, you have had an overview and updated the latest news about modern Korean society.
