“Malatanghulu” is a song released in 2023 by 13-year-old female singer and YouTuber Subive. The song quickly gained popularity among Korean teenagers, especially elementary and middle school students.
The song combined two famous Chinese dishes, ‘Malatang’ (마라탕) and ‘Tanghulu’ (탕후루), creating a new word, ‘마라탕후루’. The lyrics contain the heart of a girl who wants to attract the attention of her seniors by asking them to eat this food.
‘마라탕후루’ became a hot topic in Korean online communities with its catchy melody and fun and cute content. Challenge videos and cover videos of the song have appeared frequently on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
